Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers. -Charles W. Elio-
You love reading but how can you read more books without speed reading? How do the most successful leaders manage to ready 4 to 6 books in a month?
The Berkshire Hathaway magnate reportedly spends five to six hours a day reading five different newspapers.
The former Microsoft CEO has attested to reading 50 books a year, or roughly one book a week.
In 2015, the Facebook CEO vowed to read one book every other week “with an emphasis on learning about different cultures, beliefs, histories and technologies,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
Long before he became the CEO of Tesla, and even before he co-founded PayPal, a young Elon Musk was reading science-fiction novels for up to 10 hours a day.
So, how can you read one book a week?
According to Jim Kwik, renowned brain coach, we can get into the habit of reading by dedicating 45 minutes a day. He said:
“I went to Amazon and looked at the medium average number of words per book, and it came out to about 64,000 words. So let’s say the average person reads 200 words per minute. We’re talking about 320 minutes to get through a book, which is about 45 minutes a day, to read a book per week. That makes it a little more realistic.”
Now, 45 minutes per day is much more manageable.
Schedule your reading, Jim’s essential points:
- Nothing is better than reading in terms of building your mental muscles.
- But most people neglect to take care of their minds the way they take care of their bodies.
- If you just talk about reading, it won’t happen. Schedule your reading time when you know you can commit to it.
- Treat that time as sacred, like a meeting with your investors or your boss.
The secret is to schedule the time, treat it as an essential matter and make it a habit of reading when you are awake, and alert.
Keep an active book list.
- Every time you receive a book recommendation, write it down or note it on your smartphone. Keep a regularly updated list of books you’re excited to read.
Many incredibly successful people have embraced lifelong reading and are very selective about what they read. They prefer biographies and autobiographies of other successful people for guidance and inspiration.
Reading can also increase your brain power. Keeping your brain active and engaged prevents it from losing power. Just like any other muscle in the body, the brain requires exercise to keep it active and healthy.
