Are you looking to make a significant impact on your business? Being on video has an enormous advantage to any modern enterprise. However, most people find it intimidating. I am one of them.
I kept delaying part of my training which consists of going through a 90 Day Video Challenge because I felt self-conscious; however, as uncomfortable as it might be, I know I have to do it, and I want to do it the best way I can.
As I am entirely new to being on video, I did some research and found this great information and tips on how to get the best out of shooting a video. Jay Williams, who is a long-standing member of our community and has a YouTube channel on the subject has done an outstanding job. I am sure you will find his advice and tips helpful
WHY VIDEO MARKETING AND HOW IT IS GOING TO IMPACT YOUR BUSINESS?
There are a number of reasons for shooting videos:
- People want to know they are dealing with real people – It is a great way to express yourself and your audience will get to know you and begin to trust you.
- Interactive – You can engage in great discussions and connect more with your audience.
- Establish yourself as an expert – When you have a good knowledge of your subject, your audience will benefit from the value you are providing.
- Videos are growing faster than ever – YouTube has more than one billion users. Three hundred hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every single minute. Almost 5 billion videos are watched on Youtube every single day.
- Easy to get started – You can begin shooting videos using your smartphone or computer any time you like. Below, you will find some extra equipment tips.
- People are searching for videos related to what you offer – People are looking for solutions to their problem. Your product can provide that solution when you give your message effectively.
Common excuses not to shoot videos
- I am scared of what people will think of me – We all are. Getting out of that insecurity is the first step. Don’t let your fear to hold you back.
- What if people don’t like and don’t watch my videos – Make sure your videos are targetting the right audience. Take it as useful feedback. They are letting you know that you need to twig your message and structure it better.
- I don’t have the right equipment – Easy to use equipment at a reasonable cost is listed below.
- I don’t have anything to say – Anyone has something to say. Use your imagination and build a story around it.
- I am not as good as anyone else – Nobody is an expert at the beginning. The only difference between you and the other person is the time they took to get to where they are.
- I have to look good in front of the camera – Most people care more about the quality and warmth of your message rather than your looks.
- I don’t have space in my house for a studio – You don’t need a fancy studio. You can do it indoors or outdoors as long as it is quiet and you can get your message across effectively.
- I don’t have time – If you don’t have time to do it, it means it is not your priority. Get clear on what you want to achieve. Go back to your “WHY” and commit to it.
How to Get Started?
- A mobile phone – Smartphone can provide excellent quality videos.
- You, your experience and your story – Don’t be afraid of being vulnerable, it will inspire others. Share your message with the right people, those that relate to you, and you will encourage them to move on.
- A quiet place with good lighting – Your own home or out enjoying nature is a great place to start.
What Is Your Goal?
- Before you start your video have a good structure.
- Get confident on video
- Think of your objective – Do you want to educate, inform, or share a story?
- Relate to your audience
- Become an expert in a particular subject and deliver plenty of content through video
- Challenge yourself. Improve. Try things out.
- What solution does your product offer?
- What is the main problem/pain point of your audience?
- Connect with your audience at an emotional level
- Define the solution you want to give to your audience for them to trust you. Give value before you ask them to buy.
- Who can benefit from the product?
- Aim to target the right people who are looking for a solution to their problem
- What action do you want them to take once they watch your video
There are two types of videos:
- Content Videos – these are messages such as tutorials, educational, informative, delivering free content to give value to others.
- Video Ads – Display advertising
THE CONTENT VIDEO
- WHY – Why should they listen to you? What’s in it for them? What value can you share so that they begin to trust you?
- WHAT – What are you sharing with your audience? Get to the point. Tell them from the very beginning what you are going to share with them.
- HOW – They might ask, how can I get good at it? You can teach them through stories, tutorials, lessons.
- WHAT IF – People might as, What if that happens? Express your point of view to engage with your audience.
- STRONG CALL TO ACTION – Give your audience a reason why they should take the desired action. Use words that provoke emotion and enthusiasm.
- Attention – You only have five seconds to get people’s attention. Design your video to capture attention faster.
- Interest – Build interest by hinting at the solution. Ask questions.
- Desire – Create desire by selling the main benefits of your solution.
- Conviction – Apply a psychological trigger. People need to know they can do it.
- Call to Action – Encourage your viewer to action.
YOUR PRESENTATION WHEN SHOOTING A VIDEO
- DRESS – Dress according to the market you want to attract. What first impressions do you want to portray. Remember, you only have five seconds for the first impression.
- SHARE YOUR HONEST OPINION – Be genuine and authentic. Say what you think. Say what you believe. People will have more respect for you.
- GET GOOD KNOWLEDGE ABOUT YOUR SUBJECT – Learn your subject well
- OWN THE CAMERA – Take control of the camera. Look at the camera lens so that your audience feel you are talking to them.
- USE A TRIPOD, SELFIE-STICK OR ASK SOMEONE ELSE TO FILM YOU – Asking someone else to hold the camera while you are doing your video will build your confidence. Get outdoors to do your video. Great for confidence building.
- USE YOUR BODY LANGUAGE TO SHOW YOU CAN BE TRUSTED – The nonverbal signals are critical and are a huge part of our communication. Our facial expressions, body movements convey volumes of information.
- VARY YOUR VOICE – Use your voice effectively when you are giving a presentation.
TIPS FOR BEGINNERS
- When you are filming with your smartphone – hold it horizontally.
- Look at the camera lens while you are recording.
- Practice and post your video when you are satisfied with the result.
- Have some structure and talk from your heart.
- Learn from people you admire, watch their videos, look at how they tell stories, how they get their message across. Implement some of that into your videos.
- Ask people for feedback from people whose opinion you respect.

REMEMBER – Recording video takes up a lot of space on your phone. Transfer your files periodically to your computer to ensure you have enough space to record. Use Dropbox for storage. If you are using a Mac, AirDrop is a fast and simple way to transfer files between an iPhone and a Mac.
