You Need To Know What Is Holding You Back

What is holding you back?  Fear of failure, rejection,  disappointing others,  lack of money, the unknown, not being good enough, the list goes on.  What is your story?

My story started when I was a young girl. In those days, Mexican families adopted the patriarchal family structure. Fathers took charge of families decisions, rarely the mother or children challenged their authority. Women typically portrayed a submissive and dependent role in the marriage relationship as per religious teachings.

Growing up in this ideology hindered gender equality and I remember well when on one occasion my mother, who used to be a teacher and a full-time mother, needed some help from my brothers.  She assigned them to do household chores, and in my view, it was fair that we all help her out, but not in my dad’s point of view and all of that had to stop.

This incident led me to start noticing that it was more than just household chores. I could see that my mum accepted the set of societal rules that were dictated at that time, but she was not a happy person.

Freedom was the thought that came to my mind. It provoked an intense motivation to make changes, but I didn’t know how. I only knew I wanted my life to be different.

And while I couldn’t change the rules at that time, there was something that I could do; I began reading books about the multiculturalism and diversity of the Western culture. They had a significant influence on me, and  I used to daydream about being more involved in those possibilities.

One day, my auntie came to our home to visit and gave me a book to read. It was called The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino, translated into Spanish.

It was an inspirational read! Mr Mandino’s own story was a fantastic transformation from failure to great success. And he did it by reading books about personal development and success.  With the help of those books, he pursued his passion for writing and produced this beautiful book.

The principles he discussed in the book are known as The Ten Scrolls which offer some of the best insights and life-changing principles.  Some of the following paraphrased points I particularly liked:

Today I begin a new life.
I will greet this day with love in my heart.
I will persist until I succeed.
I am nature’s most magnificent miracle.
I will live this day as if it was my last.
Today I will be the master of my emotions.
I will cultivate the habit of laughter.
Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold.
I will act now.
I will ask for guidance.

These principles resonated with me but the transformation of my life didn’t happen immediately.  It has been a journey of self-discovery.  If you want to learn more, in my following posts I will be writing about how I have been progressing using those principles.

What about you? Have you put any of those principles into action? Tell us about your success in the comments.

With much appreciation,
